Admission Requirements

Applicants with a 3.0 cumulative GPA and a BA, BS, or BSE in history, social studies, art history, American studies, geography, political science, philosophy, sociology, or anthropology will be automatically accepted.

Applicants with a BA, BS, or BSE in any discipline with at least a 2.75 cumulative GPA will be considered on an individual basis for unconditional or conditional acceptance. A student following this path must also submit a letter of intent that discusses their background, experience with the historical discipline and professions, accomplishments, research interests, and goals.

Applicants with a BA, BS, or BSE in any discipline and a cumulative GPA between 2.5 and 2.75 will be considered for conditional acceptance. These applicants must also submit a statement of intent.

There is no foreign language requirement for the A-State MA History program. Students who plan to pursue a PhD degree, however, are encouraged to complete at least the intermediate level of a foreign language.

Applicants to the A-State MA History program may apply up to 9 hours of earned credit from a previous history graduate degree program to the completion of this degree, provided that those credits were earned within the 6-year limit for completion of the second degree.

Course work must include at least one HIST 6253 - Graduate Readings Seminar  and one HIST 6263 - Graduate Research Seminar .
